T in the Park only marginally better than V...
and even V might get The Stone Roses this year.
Here we have our first announcement of the British big guns this year. Is this what we call a good line-up these days?
Sure this calibre of a line-up might work as an all rounder, attracting the masses in an attempt to satisfy the needs of everything that’s been popular in the charts this year, but where are the good indie and alternative...

Since Blur were announced for Outstanding Contribution at the BRITs I’ve been a little surprised. I could very well be wrong and correct me if I am but…does everyone out there know who Blur are?
Everyone at home who wanted One Direction to win Best Single, do they know who Blur are? All the kids at home who watch the X Factor and buy Bruno Mars singles, are they sitting there thinking...

A Certain Trigger, Now I'm All Over the Shop
Last night I ripped this from my walls. The time as come to redecorate.
But now I feel naked.
While standing on my bed carefully peeling off each piece of cheap and flimsy NME paper I danced a little jig and played in turn and in length my greatest memories from 2005 - The Killers’ Hot Fuss, Maximo Park’s A Certain Trigger, and Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm. Belting out each...

The first gig of the year is always an important...
It’s likely to have been a good while since the last what with work and the lead-up to Christmas, the merriments of seeing friends and family, and the post-New Year recovery and return to routine. For my first gig last year I flew up to Troon to partake in my one and only Glasvegas’ tour of Scotland. The night was a palaver to say the least. I missed my original fight, paid £60 for...
A great A.V. Club column on seeing the bands you... →
rawkblog:
That singer/band/rapper/DJ you love so much now might go from strength to strength year after year. On the other hand, they might move on. Or the inspiration might fade. This might be the moment to see them before it all goes south.
I will forever treasure seeing the National’s hungry, incredible Alligator tour, Sufjan Stevens’ 2004 ATP show in the Queen Mary, Elliott Smith’s final...

American Update #7 - NEW ORLEANS
Wow… what a place. I’m not sure where to start. Anybody that gets half a chance to come here should definitely go out of their way to make it happen.
This American city is definitely my favourite so far. What Atlanta lacked in a bit of life, New Orleans…
Stephen’s is one of my favourite blogs to read so here’s a...

Live Act and Innovation of the Year - James Blake
As I was harping on about The Vaccines, a good friend of mine was harping on about James Blake. I thought the Limit to Your Love cover was pretty cool but I’ve never really “got” the dubstep thing so when James Blake was labelled so I rather closed-mindedly gave him a wide berth. Considering some of the drum n bass and dance stuff said good...

This is my last column for the Guardian’s Film & Music section (the section itself is ending next week, folding back into the paper - a sad day IMO) - blogging got me the gig so if this does turn out to be the last regular thing I write there I wanted something hopeful but faintly valedictory, and a feature on Tumblr’s positive influence on music writing felt like just the thing....

Gig and Band of the Year - The Vaccines, KCSLU, Sat 29th Jan 2011
I have a gig review for The Vaccines at The Flowerpot from October 2010 blu-tacked to my wall. The enlarged caption quote reads “Their noise is a sleek yet worldy bop that mines genius from its simplicity”. I remember it as the most excited yet real review I’ve read to date. It’s common knowledge that NME...
Sugar Tits: BREAKING BRAD →

Brad was my first boyfriend. Not the Real Kind of First Boyfriend you go to the movies with or lose your virginity to or even blow in the woods behind school but the kind that says “will you go out with me” when he can’t actually takeyou out, the kind that only holds your hand and kisses you on the cheek because you’re both only Twelve Years Old-the kind that you eventually leave...

And, content with what he’d seen, ready to re-enter the world of lips and shouting and all kinds of crazy, buttonless ways of ‘liking’ things, the blogger shut his laptop, paused, and then beat himself to death with it.

Damn a Christmas in retail
Not much from me recently, sorry I’ve been a bore! Juggling working full-time again, end of year gigs and seeing all my friends now they’ve returned from uni has been mayhem but I’m sure I’ll return to the land of tumblr soon enough with lots of end of year lists and time spent looking back over the year gone and to the one to come ;)
For now I need to say how pleased I am...
I had to borrow a ladder off one of Madness

I once borrowed a ladder from a member of Madness, not sure which one as they all look the same, but it wasn’t the one with a lot of hair. Was that the bass player? Well, it wasn’t him

Just got back from a party and I met a guy. David, 25, passionate about marketing. He was very nice nice, and a gentleman. Not bad looking. But sadly not very interesting.
I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt cos he was quite drunk tonight and i’d like to see if he’s “honest” and himself when sober. Tonight he really just told me everything I wantef to...

Last minute hollywood fancy dress help
I have a fancy dress party to go to tomorrow night and I don’t have a costume. I really hate fancy dress and have zero time tomorrow to get something together.
The theme is “Hollywood” but generally any tv/film character goes. After staying pretty stumped I figured go as a musician who’s had a film made about them, and Joan Jett sprang to mind cos they made a film about...

It's that time of year again - An Introduction to...
I’ve found some really great music blogs on here recently, most of which are written by journalists who use Tumblr as a place for personal vents that have little or no place in the publications they write for. Some of which have recently been talking about the dos, don’ts and relevance of end of year lists. Whether they’re a good or bad thing, healthy or unhealthy for the music...

Wow.
I looked this up and the original doesn’t end with “Or, perhaps, stay and save my life” but “I hate you. I really, really, really hate you”. Hmm.
